Cartilage Implant

Cartilage implants are becoming very popular especially in Korea/Japan/Taiwan. These are done via open or closed approach. We prefer to use the closed intranasal approach – the incision is made inside the nostrils.Cartilage is harvested from the ear and the nasal septum. For the bridge, silicon is used. Cartilage is an excellent material for shaping the nasal tip as there is almost no risk of pressure problems. Silicon implants can develop pressure problems in the tip especially when one desires to achieve too high a nasal tip. We use the ear cartilage and also allograft to shape the tip: this involves tip projection as well as tip rotation. It is especially useful for patients who have an upturned nose or a short nose. We perform extended septal graft as well as onlay graft to achieve this purpose.
